How to Transform a Room with Color
People often want to add more color to a room but are afraid of overdoing it. Learn how to transform a room with color in this Wayfair.com video:
If you’re just starting out adding color into a room, here is a guideline you can follow – the 60/30/10 rule. 60% of the room should be one color, 30% will be another color and the final 10% will be your accent color.
Blue is a great addition to any room because it’s a calming color. Here are three different ways to use blue in different color palettes:
- Cool and Monochromatic: This color palette is made with multiple shades of the same color, from soft to saturated. To pull this look off, make sure you have a balance between the various shades of blue, from the bedding, to the wall art, to the lamps and even the curtains. Roughly 60% of the room makes up the medium blue, while the next 30% is darker and the last 10% is the light blue. A monochromatic palette works well in any room, but especially the bedroom because it’s cool and calm.
- Complementary: Orange and blue is a great go-to color scheme. These colors are opposite on the color wheel, just like red and green or yellow and purple, so they pair well together.
- Analogous: These colors are next to each other on the color wheel, such as green, blue and purple. You can choose up to six colors. Many people like this color palette because they can use all of their favorite colors. Add natural hues to balance the space or go bold for a dramatic look.
If you’re planning on painting, do a test spot on a large wall and check it out as the light changes during the day – the bright morning sun, direct afternoon light and the after-dinner sunset.
Bright bold colors will really transform a room and give it some character. If you’re hesitant about bright bold colors, do it slowly, incorporating pieces that you find and that you really love, and you’ll create a room that you’ll fall in love with as well.
