The following tips can be used with both peel-and-stick and pasted wallpaper. Read the instructions and the label before you begin.
Determine how much wallpaper you will need by multiplying the length of the wall in inches by the width in inches and dividing by 144 to get the total square footage. Divide the total square footage by the square foot coverage per roll (listed on the label) to determine the number of rolls you will need. Include square footage for doors and windows, which allows for matching patterns, waste and trimming. If your pattern has a large repeat (12 inches or more), buy an extra roll to ensure your have enough for matching.
Make sure the power is off and remove electrical outlet and switch covers.
To allows for matching a pattern for a repeat less than six inches, cut strips at least six inches longer than the desired length.
Start in an inconspicuous upper corner. Leave a three-inch overhang at the top and bottom and trim the excess with a wallpaper razor blade.
Start applying the second and subsequent pieces starting at eye level. Line up the pattern on the second strip with the first. Work the strip up and down from that point, lining up the pattern as you press it to the wall. If the pattern becomes mismatched, gently pull the paper back a few inches and realign it. Gently smooth it with your hands. Use a wide brush over the paper to remove bubbles. For stubborn air bubbles, gently peel back the wallpaper and reapply it to the wall.
After positioning the paper strip, locate the outlet. Be sure the power is off, then carefully cut an X with a wallpaper razor over the box. Use scissors to trim the excess paper.
