How to Shop for a Farmhouse Design Style
The farmhouse style features distressed furnishings, upcycled and re-purposed items, shiplap, wrought iron, a neutral color palette and vintage finds. Learn how to shop for a farmhouse design style in this video by The Kinwoven Home:
1. Distressed wood furniture: You can select either light or dark distressed wood. Look for coffee tables, bookcases, dining tables, or pieces you can use in your entryways.
2. Black or metal furniture: Black elements like wood chairs or benches add a modern touch to a space. Look for accent pieces like tables or bookcases that incorporate iron, bar stools with metal elements, or black metal chairs. Choose distressed metal for a more rustic look or smooth metal for a more modern look.
3. Jute rugs: This type of rug mimics the look of hay without the mess. Like other types of area rugs, jute rugs ground a space and help define zones, and their neutral color will work well with a change in decor if you decide to switch up your style. They are also kid and pet friendly. For a softer rug, choose jute woven with wool.
4. Old windows: These make great accent pieces that you can use as artwork, headboards, or as stands for mounting pictures or jewelry. You can find old windows at garage sales or antique markets.
5. Signage and chalkboards: Wood signage typically has quotes or phrases related to family, food, or farm life and help create a family or community vibe. Chalkboards are practical solutions for scheduling family activities, grocery lists, and meal planning. You can incorporate both signage and chalkboards into a gallery wall, but don’t make it too busy. Try to limit signage to five pieces.
6. Wall clocks: There are different varieties of industrial-type wall clocks to choose from. A larger clock hung by itself on a wall creates a focal point.
7. Mason jars: These types of jars are very cute and very cheap and fit perfectly with the farmhouse style. Mount them on the wall or use them as bathroom organizers, flower containers or kitchen utensil holders. You can paint them or leave as is.
8. Ceramic and glass vases: Vases are very popular and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be used as sculptural decor or actual vases for greenery and flowers. Look for clean styles or glass jars with distressed metals around the top or bottom.
9. Wire and wood baskets and crates: Baskets and crates have that rustic distressed look, and they can be used in lots of different ways and in lots of different places around your house. They can be used as decor pieces, as shelves, as centerpieces on the table, or as storage containers for blankets, books and toys.
10. Cotton sticks and greenery: You can use faux branches with greenery on them and use them as a base around your home. When you have visitors, you can add fresh flowers to little vases or to the faux greenery. Cotton sticks add another great element and help tie white and brown color palettes together.
