How to Select the Right Entry Hardware
Door entry hardware adds curb appeal to your home, but it’s also an important part of keeping your home secure. Learn how to select the right entry hardware in this Build.com video:
There are countless combinations of styles, finishes, handles and locking mechanisms. There are three main things you need to consider when picking the right handle set for your home – your door type, your handle style and your lock type.
Door Type: The hardware you choose has to be compatible with your entry door. Determine how thick your door is (it can range anywhere from 1-1/4 to over 3 inches). Next, measure the cross bore and back set. The cross bore is the diameter of the hole that the hardware fits into and should measure 2-1/8 inches, so the back set is the measurement from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole (the two standard measurements are 2-3/8 inches or 2-3/4 inches). The last thing you need to know is the handing (this means whether it opens to the left or the right). Stand on the outside of your door; wherever the hinges are located indicates the handing. If they are on the left, it is a left-handed door. Some hardware has reversible handing, and some are strictly left- or right-handed. Read the product specifications to make sure you get the correct one for your door.
Handle Style: Now that you know what type of hardware your entry door requires, you can choose a knob, lever or handle. Choose a style that complements the architecture of your home and a finish to match the other metals on your home’s exterior, like outdoor lighting fixtures.
Lock Type: There are two main options: a keyed deadbolt and keyless entry. Keyless or electronic locks are opened with a keypad, a touchscreen or a fob. There are even smart models that can be locked or unlocked with your cell phone or other devices. You can go online and sort by style and finish to match your door handle and decide whether you want a deadbolt or electronic lock.
