How to Select Bathroom Paint

When choosing paint for a bathroom, two major considerations are sheen and color. Learn how to select bathroom paint in this Ace Hardware video:

When it comes to sheen, it’s a good idea to use something a little bit shinier like a satin or semi-gloss finish because of the potential moisture level. Keep in mind that the shinier the finish, the more imperfections can show through on the walls, so make sure that the prep work is done so you get your desired finished look.

There are many considerations for color, and of course it’s a personal choice. If you have a window in your bathroom that lets in natural light, you can probably go with a darker color, but if you don’t have a window, you may prefer a lighter color to make the space seem more open and larger. You’ll also want to take into account the color of the floor, wall tile, vanity and other accent pieces. While color is a personal choice, to get professional results, it’s all about the prep work and using the right products.

If you’re finding it difficult to select a color, you may want to go with some color samples. While there are swatches you will see at the store, you can buy small color paint samples to try them out inside the space. Make sure you paint a large enough sample, and then pay attention to that color at different times of the day because the color can look different in the daylight and in the evening, especially if you have natural light in your bathroom.

Another consideration in choosing a paint color is where the bathroom is located. If it’s adjacent to another room like an ensuite bathroom, you may want to have a reference point of that color with the room it’s connected to.

Lastly, an online color visualizer lets you virtually try out the color in the entire space to see if you’re “falling in love” for all the right reasons.
