How to Replace Cabinet Hinges

Upgrading a cabinet’s hardware can improve its functionality, and it’s also a simple project you can do yourself. Learn how to replace cabinet hinges in this video by The Home Depot:

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • Screwdriver
  • Combination square
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Hinges and screws

1. Remove the door by unscrewing the old hinges from the cabinet frame, then unscrew the old hinges from the cabinet door. This is also a good time to remove any other knobs and handles you want to replace. Fill old screw holes with wood putty.

2. To position the new hinges, set a combination sqaure at the hinges to be equidistant from the door’s top and bottom edge. Place the new hinge in position and mark drill holes for the screws. Work on one door at a time, making sure the new hinges cover the old holes.

3. Drill the pilot holes using a bit slightly smaller than your screw, then secure the hinges to the door and re-attach hardware or install new knobs and handles. Be careful not to drill all the way through the cabinet door. Tip: Update original hinges with self-closing hinges.

4. Re-attach the cabinet door by screwing the new hinges into the cabinet frame (this could require two people). Repeat with each door until the project is finished.
