How to Replace a Ceiling Fan

This Build.com video shows you a step-by-step process for replacing and installing a ceiling fan:



You will need a screwdriver, electric screwdriver and ladder. All other parts needed will come with the new fan. The steps are as follows:

  • Flip the breaker to the off position.
  • Remove the old fan starting with the light assembly, then moving on to the fan blades.
  • Disconnect the wires before pulling the old fan down.
  • Attach the mounting plate of the new fan to the ceiling. If provided, hang the fan by the supplied support cable.
  • Attach the wires making sure to match colors. If a red wire is available, attach the blue wire from the fan to the red wire; if not, attach the blue wire to the black wire.
  • Attach the fan body to the mounting plate.
  • Attach the fan blades.
  • Attach the light bulb and light shade.
