How To Fix a Large Drywall Hole

You can fix a large drywall hole in 60 minutes with the right tools and materials. Learn how in this Build.com video:

You will need the following items:

  • Utility knife
  • Drywall joint tape
  • Drywall screws
  • Various taping knives, 14 inch and 3 inch
  • Electric drill
  • Scrap wood, preferably 1×1
  • Sanding block or fine grit sandpaper
  • Quick-set joint compound
  • Square measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Bucket

1. Measure and cut out damaged drywall: Cut out a square hole slightly larger than the pre-existing hole so you can easily fit in another piece of dry wall. After marking off a square slot larger than the hole, use a straight edge and utility knife to score the drywall. Make cuts from the corners toward the center so the drywall breaks freely.

2. Measure and cut out new dry wall replacement: Cut out a square the same size as the hole from the scrap drywall, making sure it’s the same thickness.

3. Trim backing for the patch: Trim the scrap wood and mount it into the hole to make the backing for the patch.

4. Apply the dry wall tape to the patch.

5. Mix joint compound and apply to wall: Take a small amount of joint compound and pour in a bucket. Add a little bit of water and work it in to a thick mud-like consistency. Use a large knife to smooth off the joint compound.

6. Once the joint compound is dry, use the sanding block or sandpaper to smooth out the patch.

7. Finish the job by covering with a fresh coat of paint.
