How to Plant Fall Edibles

With the change from summer to fall, it’s time to switch to cool season plants like lettuces, kale, broccoli, carrots and root vegetables. Learn how to plant fall edibles in this video by The Home Depot:

Purchase your choice of fall edibles. By starting with transplants, you can harvest in just a few days.

After removing the remnants of the summer vegetables, before you plant, improve the soil by cultivating in several bags of garden soil into the bed to a depth of three inches and smooth out with a rake.

For visual interest, alternate rows of different colors (e.g. one row of bright green, one row of red, etc.). Space the plants about 12 inches apart at the depth of the root ball. Loosen the root balls to give the plants a fast start.

New growth occurs in the center of the plant, so harvest the outer leaves only to get the most out of your fall edibles.
