How to Plant a Vegetable Container Garden

Growing crops in containers can bring beauty and bounty to your deck or patio. Learn how to plant a vegetable container garden in this Better Homes and Gardens video:

You will need a planter and several vegetable and marigold plants for this project.

1. Pick a spot on your deck or patio that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day. Fill the planter with all-purpose potting soil. Make sure the container has drainage holes; if it doesn’t, drill several on the bottom.

2. Remove a transplant from its nursery pot. If the roots are matted, untangle them with your fingers. Dig a hole with your hands or with a trowel and set the plant in at the same depth as it was growing in the pot. Repeat this step with other plants. Tuck in marigolds to add cheerful color.

3. Water until the soil is evenly moist and excess drips through the drainage holes. Small planters may need daily watering, while larger ones may go a few days between watering.
