How to Patch a Ceiling

Ceiling damage is unsightly, but it can be fixed fairly easily. Learn how to patch a ceiling in this Lowe’s video:



Here’s how to repair the following types of ceiling damage:

Repairing Cracks:

1. Sand away any loose paint and drywall.

2. Apply mesh tape over the crack.

3. Spread joint compound over the tape and smooth.

Nail Pops:

1. Nails or screws are driven into studs. Drive screws into that stud on both sides.

2. Remove any damaged material.

3. Remove or replace the original nail or screw.

4. Spread joint or patching compound over the area.

Large Holes:

1. Cut a rectangle around the damaged area.

2. Add wooden cleats behind each side for support.

3. Attach a patch piece to the cleats.

4. Place mesh tape and spread joint compound.

5. Apply a second and third coat over repairs and feather.

6. Sand the dry joint compound until smooth.

7. Clean with a damp rag to remove dust.

8. Prime and paint the ceiling to match.
