How to Paint Exterior Shutters
Giving your shutters a fresh coat of paint is an easy way to boost your home’s curb appeal. Learn how to paint exterior shutters in this Ace Hardware video:
Prepping and Cleaning
- Remove shutters. This allows them to cure and dry fast. (Tip: If they are stuck, they can be taped off and painted in place)
- Place on sawhorses. (Tip: Try two large buckets if you don’t have sawhorses)
- If the shutters are vinyl, clean them with an all-purpose cleaner/degreaser. Remove all dirt and grime. Rinse with water and allow to dry. (Note: Do not paint vinyl shutters darker than the original color as this may cause the surface to warp due to heat absorption)
- If the shutters are wood, check the condition of the shutters. Remove flaking or chipping paint with a paint scraper. Sand surface lightly with medium grit sanding sponge. Wipe away dust and residue with a cloth.
Painting
- Use exterior 100% acrylic latex hi-gloss. (Tip: For thicker paint, use a chemical stripping agent)
- Paint sides and ends first. Apply in a well-ventilated area. Use small brushes to reach slats and small spaces.
- Allow paint to dry completely before applying a second coat.
- Allow shutters to dry overnight before re-installing.
