How to Paint a Colorful Patchwork Accent Wall
Use paint to create a one-of-a-kind focal point in your room. Learn how to paint a colorful patchwork accent wall in this video by Ace Hardware:
If you have a master suite, pull the colors from your adjoining master bedroom and bathroom palettes to tie the two rooms together using the main wall color as your starting point.
You will need the following tools and materials for this DIY project:
- Drop cloth
- White cloth rags
- Roller pan
- Mini paint roller
- Utility knife
- Quality paint brush
- Pencil
- Spackling compound
- Tape measure
- Painters tape
- Paint samples (pints)
- Level
1. Start by selecting the number of colors and squares you would like to paint. If you’re working with an existing wall color, select colors to complement the main color of your room decor. Limit your selection to a maximum of four colors to avoid a look that is too busy. For a subtle monochromatic effect, select your favorite color plus 2-3 lighter shades of the same color.
2. For the standard 10′ x 10′ wall featured in this video, the 12″ x 12″ squares start four inches from the top, with each square set two inches apart.
3. Measure the full width of the wall and mark the center. The center of the wall will be in the middle of the two-inch gap. The first patch begins one inch in each direction from the center point.
4. Using a level, measure 12-inch squares, leaving 2-inch gaps between each square.
Measure another row of squares directly above the first row with a two-inch gap above and on the other side of each square. Repeat this step until you have completed five rows and four columns of squares.
5. Use a level to ensure each square is straight vertically and horizontally, and then tape each square with painters tape.
6. Cover your floor with a drop cloth to protect the surface. Make sure the walls are clean, sound and free of dirt or grease. If you use an interior paint and primer in one, you do not need to prime before you paint.
7. Using a mini paint roller, paint the inside of each taped square, alternating the colors of each square in every row.
8. Allow to dry completely, then remove the painters tape.
