How to Make String Light Planters

String lights create a warm inviting vibe to any outdoor space. While it’s relatively easy to install them on a porch or deck, it’s more challenging to hang them further out in a yard where there are no supports. Planters can do double duty by acting as container gardens and supports for stringing lights. Learn how to make string light planters in this Better Homes and Gardens video:



1. Attach corner braces to post.

2. Drill pilot holes in top ends of post.

3. Screw hook into post.

4. Place wood post into planter.

5. Use corner braces to fasten post to bottom of planter.

6. Pour fast-setting concrete mix into planter.

7. Add water according to package instructions and stir. Concrete should be several inches below top of planter.

8. Allow concrete to cure.

9. Drill drainage holes above concrete line.

10. Put layer of rock on top of concrete.

11. Top with potting soil.

12. Add plants to top of container.

13. Repeat process with additional planters.

14. String the lights through each hook.
