This DIY project may look complicated, but if you follow these tips it’s a snap. Click here for a detailed tools and materials list and project instructions.
1. Once your backer board is cut to size, place the dowels and the mirrors on the backer, but don’t attach with adhesive at this time. There should be about two inches of the backer showing around the mirrors.
2. Cut oversized pieces of the casing and use the mirrors as a guide to mark your 45 degree miter for the ends and side pieces. Tape the corners together to keep them snug while you work.
3. Apply construction adhesive to the backer and attach the side pieces. Press the pieces in place and tape them together while the glue dries.
4. Cut the screen molding for the center section a bit long, and mark the angle cut with a pencil. Cut to length and then repeat that process with the filler pieces. Sand the ends so that they match the roundness of the trim. Once everything fits well and is sanded, remove the dividers and mirrors and paint with your desired color.
5. Optional Step: The mirror tiles can be customized to create a unique aged look. Make sure to do this in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves, a ventilation mask and eye protection. Place the mirror face down and spray with a multi-surface remover. Lightly scrape the back of the mirror with a plastic scraper. Repeat if necessary, and then rinse the mirror with water. Again, place the mirror face down and spray with a small amount of muriatic acid (don’t overdo it as a little goes a long way). Wait about 20-30 minutes until you can see through the glass where the acid was sprayed, and then rinse with water and dry. Spray with antique pewter glass paint and let it dry.
6. Finish by assembling your project using adhesive tape squares for the mirrors, construction adhesive for the dividers, and a small bead of silicone on the back of the trim. Let everything dry.
Place the mirror panels on your fireplace mantel for an elegant display for all to enjoy.
