Start by making the mirror:

1. Cut narrow and wide stiles and top and bottom rails.
2. Assemble the frame using glue and clamps. Let dry.
3. Create the backerboard that houses the mirror. Apply the filler strips to the hardboard, creating a shallow recess, and then apply the mirror. Be sure to use an adhesive specially designed for mirrors so it doesn’t get damaged.
4. Attach the mirror to the frame.

Now build the floating shelf:

1. Start with the two top pieces and add the hangers and the end pieces. Because you drill counterbores and countersinks to reinforce the joints, you’ll also add wood plugs to hide the screw heads.
2. Join the two assemblies with the trough, then measure and cut the bottom piece to fit. Attach it with screws and use wood plugs to cover them.
3. Attach the shelf to the frame using screws and spacers to position the shelf as if it’s floating.
4. Apply the hanging hardware and a bumper at the bottom, and it’s ready to enhance any space.
