How to Make an Entryway Storage Rack
This easy-to-build wooden rack will add storage space and organization around your front entryway bench. Learn how to make an entryway storage rack in this HGTV video:
This DIY entryway storage rack will turn a simple front bench into an organized landing zone for the entire family.
For this project, you will need the following wood/cuts:
- Six 2×2 @ 8″
- One 2×2 @ 48″
- Four 1×2 @ 72″
- Two 1×6 @ 21″
- One 1×6 @ 54″
- Two 1×6 @ 66″
This rack is built around a bench featured in the video, so make sure you use dimensions to fit a bench that you have at home.
1. Measure 3 inches from one end of the 72″ piece. Position one 8″ piece to create an overhang of one inch on the back side and a 3-1/2 inch overhang on the front side. Attach with wood glue, clamp and screw.
2. The next 2×2 @ 8″pieces will be placed 23 inches apart from each other on the 72″ piece. Use a speed square to ensure the pieces are aligned correctly. Attach with wood glue, clamp and screw.
3. The front side of your new 1×4 should line up with the back side of your old 1×4. Attach with wood glue, clamp and screw using 2-inch wood screws, going in from the underside up.
4. Make the feet by adding the 21″ piece to the bottom inside corner of the structure. This completes the left-side structure.
5. Mirror/repeat Steps 1-4 to create the right-side structure.
6. Take the 54″ piece and secure it to both side structures 12 inches down from the top.
7. Take another 1×6 to create a top shelf, leaving a 3-3/4 inch overhang on each side.
8. Use the last 1×6 to create the bottom brace, leaving a 3-3/4 inch overhang on each side.
9. Place the last 2×2, which will be the support brace, about an inch in front of the bench.
10. Use 220 grit sandpaper to sand down any rough edges and get rid of any splinters.
11. Stain the rack.
12. Add decorative hooks across the 54-inch crossbar. Follow the instructions that come with your hardware.
13. To ensure your entryway rack is safe and secure, use a 7-inch furniture cable and attach it to the back of the rack and to the wall.
