When you’re short on space, consider growing your plants vertically. Learn how to make a trellis planter box for growing flowering vines, climbing edibles and herbs in this video by The Home Depot:
You will need the following tools and materials for this DIY project:
- Miter saw
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Power drill
- 12 ft 1×8 in board
- 6 ft 1×8 in board
- 6 ft 2×2 in board (2)
- 4 ft 2×2 in baluster
- 12 ft 1×2 in board (2)
- 1.25 in screws (50)
- 2-in screws (4)
- Swivel casters (2)
- Locking casters (2)
- Plants
- Soil
1. Cut boards: Measure the lumber, then use a miter saw to cut your boards to size. You’ll need to make the following cuts:
- Six 24″ 1×8 boards
- Four 17-1/2″ 1×8 boards
- Two 14-1/2 2×2 balusters
- Two 6′ 2×2 boards
- Nine 32″ 1×2 boards
2. Assemble base pieces: You’ll need two 24-in long 1×1 boards, two 14-1/2 in long 2×2’s and two 6-ft long 2×2’s. using deck screws, attach the shorter 2×2’s vertically to the corners of a 1×8 board. This will be the front side of the base. Then, attach the 6-foot 2×2’s to the corners of the other 1×8 in board to create the backside.
3. Assemble front and back: To create the front and back of the planter box, you’ll need to add four more of the 24-in 1×8 boards. On the front half of the base, secure two 1×8 boards onto the 2×2’s with deck screws. Make sure your 1×8 boards are flush with the top of the vertical 2×2’s. Repeat the same process on the back half of the base.
4. Attach sides: Place the base pieces together on a level surface with the 2×2 pieces pointing up and the bottom boards flush. Now you’re ready to attach the remaining 1×8 boards using deck screws, completing the planter box portion of the project.
5. Build trellis: To add the trellis, tip the planter box on its back. You’ll need the nine pieces of 1×2. Center three of the 1×2 strips across the vertical 2×2’s, securing them 3-3/4 inches apart, then drop down 8 inches and repeat the process for the remaining two sets.
6. Attach casters: To make the planter easier to move around, attach casters using 1-1/4 inch coated screws. If the planter will be placed on a slight incline, install locking casters to keep it from rolling unintentionally.
Finally, plant your favorite vining flowers, herbs or edibles, and enjoy!
