How to Make a Terrarium
A terrarium is a low-maintenance creative way to bring your love of gardening indoors. It’s a easy and fun project for a gift, for your kids, or for yourself. Learn how to make a terrarium in this video by The Home depot:
You will need the following tools and materials:
- Glass container
- Small houseplants
- Pebbles
- Potting soil
- Activated charcoal chips
- Moss
- Long-handled spoon
- Skewer and cork
- Spray mister
- Small decorations
- Small paintbrushes
- Paper plate or newspaper for funnel (optional)
1. Be sure to choose a clear glass container that has an opening large enough for your hand to fit easily inside.
2. When selecting plants, consider these varieties that do well in a terrarium:
- Small ferns
- Creeping fig
- Polka dot plant
- Pothos
- Baby’s tears
- Nerve plant
- Peperomia
- Moss
- Dwarf black mondo grass
For visual interest, choose plants with varying heights, colors and textures.
3. To create the base layer, add one inch of pebbles, then add a thin layer of activated charcoal chips to curb any musty odors. Top off with bits of moss. A skewer with a cork on the end is the perfect DIY tool for arranging and tamping inside a terrarium.
4. Funnel in a couple of inches of potting soil on top of the base layer. Using a wooden spoon handle, make holes to accommodate your plants. Gently loosen the roots and place the plants in the soil.
5. After tamping down the soil, top it off with moss or pebbles. Dust excess soil off the glass interior with a small paintbrush. Lightly water plants with a spray mister.
6. Adding tiny decor is a good way to boost the fun factor, especially if you’r building the terrarium for kids.
Your terrarium should thrive if you keep it watered and avoid direct harsh sunlight. A close terrarium requires misting once a month. Mist an open terrarium whenever the soil appears dry.
