How to Make a Shadow Box Wall Planter

Add an unexpected touch of greenery to a bookshelf or wall by turning a shadow box into a planter. Learn how to make a shadow box wall planter in this video by Better Homes and Gardens:



1. Apply two coats of polycrylic clear finish to an unfinished shadow box. Lightly sand between coats.

2. Mask the interior of the shadow box with scrap paper and painters tape.

3. Spray-paint the exterior of the shadow box. Let dry, then remove the paper and tape from the interior.

4. Build a small rectangular box for the plants by measuring and cutting wood pieces and gluing them together to fit the shadow box.

5. Apply two coats of poly to the planter box. Let dry and lightly sand between coats.

6. Line the planter box with a plastic bag.

7. Add plants and soil.

8. Trim off excess bag to fit.

9. Slide the planter box into the shadow box.

10. Mount the shadow box on a wall or display it on a bookshelf.
