For a classic look at the holidays, just pick up some apples from the grocery store or farmer’s market. Apples are one of the most symbolic fruits and have been used for thousdands of years in festive decorating. Learn how to make a simple apple topiary centerpiece in this video by P. Allen Smith:
For this project, you will need:
- Large conical piece of styrofoam
- Lady apples
- Crabapples
- Small leaf greenery
1. Cover the conical styrofoam with the lady apples by attaching them with floral picks. Use vegetable oil to give them a nice shine.
2. Fill in the empty in-between spaces with crabapples and small leaf greenery.
3. Place the topiary in the center of a tray or large platter. Use a clay saucer to elevate the tree about 2-4 inches.
4. Add some mixed greenery and some red delicious apples to the base to complete the centerpiece.
The apple topiary should last up to two weeks, especially in a cool room, but it’s a good idea to keep extra apples in the refrigerator for replacements.
