How to Make a High Style Folding Screen

Divide and conquer any space with a decorative folding screen. Learn more about this high style project in this Lowe’s video:

This flexible folding screen is built from hollow core doors and features a stylish ceiling medallion that is echoed by painted patterns.

For this project, you will need three 30-inch Lauan bifold doors, six square ceiling medallions, eight 3-inch narrow hinges (packs of 2), tape measure, drill and bit set, and screwdriver or driving bits. Get detailed directions and the folding screen design stencil here.

Each set of bifold doors has hinges that you’ll remove for painting purposes. The doors come in pairs, so the number of doors you need depends on the width of the screen you want. If you’re going to replace the hinges, fill the holes with some wood filler. Once that’s dry, sand the doors lightly and give each one three coats of paints. Set them aside to dry.

Paint each medallion that will be applied to the doors and set them aside to dry. When the doors are dry, using the folding screen design stencil, trace the shape onto the doors according to the layout in the detailed directions. Then paint them and let them dry completely.

Use spacers to get the right separation for the hinges. Place the second door on top of the first with the painted patterns facing each other. To attach the hinges, first drill pilot holes and then drive the screws using a self-centering bit for easier and more accurate work. To get the screen’s accordion effect, the next door is hinged on the opposite side with the pattern facing up. Keep alternating the pattern and the hinge placement until you reach the number of doors you planned for.

Apply the medallions to the doors with construction adhesive and let dry completely.

Now you’re ready to put your pretty screen to work!
