How to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl used to be an inexpensive but not visually appealing flooring option. Today’s vinyl, however, is a legitimate alternative to hardwood and laminate that is beautiful, durable, waterproof and easy to install and maintain. This video by BuildDirect.com shows you how to prepare, cut and install floating vinyl plank flooring:

Sub-Floor Preparation

  • Make sure the installation surface (typically concrete) is smooth and clear of any deficiencies.
  • Underlayment is not required, which makes your installation cost lower. All that’s needed is a moisture barrier.

Plank Layout

  • Lay out your boards to do a visual inspection before installing.
  • Randomize your board layout for a more natural look.
  • Do a dry run and see if you have to rip any boards (pre-cut them lengthwise to fit) before starting the installation.

Quick Tips

  • Walls aren’t always straight, so draw a chalk line on the floor to make sure your first row of boards is straight.
  • Leave 1/8″ space between the boards and any solid structure.

Installation

  • A tape measure, ruler and knife are the only tools you need for a click-lock install.
  • Stagger the boards for a nicer visual aesthetic.
  • When cutting a board to size, score the board twice, and then snap apart.
  • When putting a board down, bring the board in at a 45 degree angle to the adjacent board, apply pressure and snap down.
  • Repeat the process.
