How to Install and Maintain a Rain Barrel

Rain barrels capture rain water for you to use outdoors, saving you money on your water bill, especially during the hot summer months. Learn how to install and maintain a rain barrel in this Lowe’s video:

An important first step is to check local ordinances and with your HOA to see if rain barrels are legal/permitted in your area.

How to install a rain barrel:

1. Choose a location near an active downspout or runoff.

2. Build a sturdy foundation to raise the barrel. Use a strong material as the full barrel will be heavy.

3. Leave enough room to fit a watering can underneath.

4. Detach your downspout straps and remove the lower spout.

5. Add a flexible hose to bring the water to the barrel.

6. Place a debris screen to keep out mosquitoes if needed.

Maintain your rain barrel by cleaning it yearly to prevent buildup. Use water regularly as standing water invites mosquitoes. Add anti-larval tablets if mosquitoes become a problem.

NOTE: Do NOT use collected water for drinking, cooking or bathing.
