1. Use landscape spray paint to mark guideline.

2. Cut along the guideline with a sharp flat spade.

3. Remove extra grass with a hand hoe.

4. Follow up with a 6-inch deep angled cut.

5. Trim grass with garden shears for a razor-sharp edge.

6. Rake trench.

7. Plant your bed.

8. Add mulch, but not into the trench.
