How to Decorate a Stairway with a Christmas Garland

If you have a staircase in your entryway, a beautiful garland can turn it into a stunning focal point during the holiday season. Learn how to decorate a stairway with a Christmas garland in this video by The Kinwoven Home:

1. Coordinate your garlands with your tree. For example, if you have a flocked tree, you should have either flocked garlands or garlands with flocked accents.

2. Plan out how your garlands will hang. Lay them out on (don’t attach to) the staircase railing. This will help you determine how many garlands you will need and how you will hang them. If you have lighted garlands, make sure the plug is in close proximity to an outlet.

3. Light and fluff: Pre-lit garlands are best as they will save you a lot of time, but if you don’t have any, you can add lights to each garland by following these steps:

  • Take the garland off the railing and note its position on the railing. Fluff the branches and remove any manufacturer tags.
  • Bend the garland in half and identify the center.
  • Take your 100-light string, identify the center, tie the light string and garland together center to center, and weave the lights out. This will ensure your lighting is even and consistent throughout your garland.
  • Keep any replacement bulbs in a separate labelled plastic bag.

4. Attach the garlands to the staircase with twine.

5. Decorate the focal point at the bottom of the staircase, then carry the theme and materials up.

6. Decorate the “mini moments”, which are places where the garland is attached to the railing. Create smaller versions of the focal point, using a lot of the same materials.

7. Connect the mini moments with ribbon, weaving small pieces into the garlands.

8. Add specialty details like icicles or small ornaments, layering them throughout the garlands. Make sure they are well-fastened.
