How to Create a Succulent and Cacti Container Garden

Succulent gardens are easy to create and maintain and are a great way to add greenery to your home. The only requirements for care are lots of light and watering every two weeks. Learn how to create a succulent and cacti container garden in this video by The Home Depot:

You will need the following materials:

  • Large container
  • Succulent and cactus plants (a symmetric growth pattern is a sign of a healthy cactus)
  • Liquid tomato fertilizer
  • Cactus soil (sandy but light and airy – allows for proper drainage)
  • Soil cover (tops off the garden and gives it a nice finish)

Follow these steps to create your container garden:

  1. If there are no holes in the bottom of the container, add a layer of rocks to create a drainage area underneath the soil.
  2. Fill the container halfway with soil and make holes for the plants.
  3. Start with the biggest succulents and place them in the background.
  4. Add a mix of succulents (different sizes, shapes, colors) in the front.
  5. Place a cork on top of a skewer and use it to tap down the soil.
  6. Add a top dressing such as rocks, sand or small pebbles for finishing (optional).

Adding a tomato fertilizer mix (1/2 tsp of fertilizer dissolved in several cups of water) every few months will help keep your garden healthy and vibrant.
