How to Convert a Coffee Table into an Ottoman

An ottoman provides extra seating as well as a space where you can comfortably put your feet up. If you don’t want to give up your existing coffee table or don’t have room for an ottoman, you can build a removable cushioned table cover that will let your coffee table do double duty. Learn how to convert a coffee table into an ottoman in this DIY Network video:

1. Measure the table and have a piece of 1/2″ plywood cut to size at your local hardware store. The plywood should be 1-1/2″ bigger than the table the perimeter.

2. Cut four 1×3 pieces of wood to fit around plywood like a box.

3. Create a box by connecting the four wood pieces. Reinforce the corners with L-shaped braces.

4. Attach the box to the plywood with 1-1/4″ deck screws.

5. Using spray adhesive, adhere 3″ foam to the top of the plywood and 1/2″ foam around the sides.

6. Wrap batting around the top and sides of the box. Staple at the bottom of the box. Trim off any excess.

7. Wrap a decorative fabric around the box. Stretch and staple underneath.

8. Cover the underside of the plywood with felt to protect the table.

9. Place the box over the table.
