How to Conquer Your Closet

Decluttering and organizing your closet is something you should do at least once a year. Learn how to conquer your closet in this video by The Kinwoven Home:

1. Create a location for three separate piles: a “keep” pile, a “maybe” pile and a “donate” pile.

2. Take everything out of your closet. You’ll find clothing you forgot you had and clothing that’s questionable as it’s out of style.

3. Face time a friend (or spouse or roommate). if you do’t do this, you will talk yourself into keeping everything you have. Ask them for their honest opinion of each item. This will help you decide whether to keep it or donate it.

4. Ask yourself the tough questions to decide whether to keep or donate an item:

  • Have you worn this item in the last year?
  • If you saw it again in a store, would you buy it?
  • Is it damaged?
  • Does it make you feel good when you wear it?
  • Is it a hassle to wear? Does it have itchy fabric? Does it fit properly?
  • Is it an “old you” item? Is it still your style?

5. Go back through your “maybe” pile. Your goal is to “zero” it out (empty the pile). If you are reluctant to donate an item, put it in a box and store it away under the bed or in the garage or attic. If you haven’t given it a thought after 3-6 months, donate it; if you have, keep it.

6. Put everything back in the closet in an organized fashion. Thin felt hangers will prevent clothing from falling off and take up less space in the closet. Categorize your clothing by type, and then by color, will make it easier to find what you need for the day.
