How to Clean Charcoal and Gas Grills

Keeping your outdoor grill clean will improve its operation and safety as well as the taste of your food. Learn how to clean charcoal and gas grills in this Better Homes and Gardens video:



Charcoal Grill:

1. Scrub with grill brush while grate is still warm.

2. Remove grate when cool.

3. Soak in warm soapy water for 15 minutes.

4. Scrub grate with steel wool. Rinse.

5. Once grill is cool, dispose of burned coals.

6. Remove excess ash with shop vacuum.

7. Wash inside of grill using mild soap and steel wool.

8. Remove ash catcher from bottom of grill and dispose of ash.

9. Rinse with hose.

10. Allow all pieces to dry before reassembling grill.

Gas Grill:

1. Turn grill to high for 15 minutes to burn off any food bits.

2. Turn off and allow to cool slightly.

3. Scrub racks with grill brush.

4. Remove grates and internal parts when cool.

5. Soak in warm soapy water for 15 minutes.

6. Scrub with steel wool.

7. Once grill is completely cool, wipe with cloth and soapy water.

8. Clean grill inside by using grill brush to dislodge soot.

9. Use shop vacuum to remove debris.

10. Rinse with hose.

11. Wipe with towel to dry.
