How to Clean an Area Rug

Basic care, deep cleaning and stain removal will keep your area rugs looking their best. Depending on the material, your rugs may require special cleaning care. Learn how to clean an area rug in this video by Better Homes and Gardens:

Basic rug care: Vacuum regularly, avoiding fringe. Use a stiff brush to remove stubborn pet hair; brush in direction of the nap of the rug. Turn rugs once or twice annually to even out wear. Shake or beat smaller rugs vigorously to remove dirt and grit.

Woven or braided rugs: Protect floor surface under the rug, and apply a commercial carpet-cleaning foam over the rug surface. Rub in foam according to product directions and let dry. Finish by vacuuming. Dry thoroughly before returning rug to the floor.

Natural fiber rugs: Vacuum frequently, flipping annually. To remove stains, protect floor beneath the rug, and scrub stain with a soft brush dipped in soapy water. Rinse using a wet cloth. Blot wet spot with a dry cloth. Use a fan to increase drying time.

Fur, sheepskin or hide rugs: Shake unscented talcum powder onto rug and leave for several hours. Brush talcum powder through rug, then vacuum or shake out. Clean the back side with a damp soapy cloth. Rinse with a clean damp cloth. Let dry completely before returning rug to the floor.

Stain removal: Use a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1 tsp liquid laundry detergent and 1 tbsp white vinegar. Apply to stain, rinse, then blot dry. If stain remains, spray commercial spot cleaner onto stain, blot with a wet cloth, and let air dry.

Wax removal: Peel off as much wax as possible, then lay a paper towel over the area. Apply a warm iron to help release the wax from the rug and into the paper towel. Use a spot cleaner if needed.

Gum removal: Peel off as much gum as possible, then put ice cubes into a plastic bag and place on top of the area to harden the remaining gum. Scrape off with a spoon or butter knife.

Tomato sauce removal: Remove excess with a paper towel. Sponge with cool water and spray with oxygen cleaner. Rinse with a solution of 1/2 cup white vinegar and 1 cup water. Blot until dry.
