How to Choose the Right Paint Sheen

Before you start painting, choose the sheen that’s right for you. This video by The Home Depot presents the pros and cons of five different paint sheens:

Sheen simply refers to how much light the paint reflects. The more reflective the paint, the shinier it will look and the easier it will be to clean. Here is a comparison of five common paint sheens:

Flat:

  • Doesn’t reflect light, so it’s great for hiding surface imperfections
  • Perfect for ceilings and walls
  • Tends to show dirt and scuff marks
  • Doesn’t stand up well to scrubbing

Eggshell:

  • Reflects a little light
  • Hides some imperfections
  • Smoother finish than flat
  • Easier to wash and more durable
  • Popular for walls, kitchens, baths

Satin:

  • Washable
  • Great for busy kitchens, baths, hallways, kids rooms
  • Has a richer appearance than flat or eggshell

Semi-Gloss:

  • Reflective and shiny
  • Durable and washable
  • Good for trim, cabinets and doors

Hi-Gloss:

  • Shiniest and most reflective
  • Perfect for trim, doors and woodwork
