How to Build and Plant a Window Box
Window boxes work well with many home styles and are a great way to wake up the look of your home. Learn how to build and plant a window box in this Lowe’s video:
A window box is an easy DIY project. The base of each box is a series of slats for drainage that you attach to a front and a back piece. Attach two curved end pieces and decorative trim pieces, and that’s it. Get a full materials and tools list and project instructions here.
Plant your window box up for your conditions, whether sun or shade. Use the familiar formula of thriller-filler-spiller:
- Thriller: Focal point that gives the box its “wow” factor
- Filler: Lower growing companion that fills in around the base of the thrillers
- Spiller: Sprawling companion that cascades out of the window box, softening its hard lines
To mix the practical with the pretty, fill your window box with herbs. You can snip them as needed for cooking and still enjoy them throughout the summer. In fact, they will look even fuller and healthier with each cutting. As one example, you can plant basil as the thriller, oregano as the filler and thyme as the spiller.
To make the plant combination look more cohesive, you can echo the color scheme from one plant to another.
If you’d rather have edibles, window boxes make a fine home for leaf lettuces in cooler weather.
