How to Build an Upholstered Headboard

A headboard can be the focal point of your bedroom, but finding the perfect one can be extremely expensive. Learn how to build a custom upholstered floating headboard from a reclaimed door and decorative trim for less than $200 in this Buildipedia video:

Assemble and mount your headboard as follows:

1. Measure and cut the length of trim needed to fit along the top line of the door. If you know your measurements ahead of time, you can save on this step by having the hardware store cut the trim for you.

2. Sand the surface of the door and the cut edges of the trim to smooth out any rough spots and prep for painting. Wipe away dust with a damp rag and let dry.

3. Use a low- or no-VOC paint with a built-in primer and apply using a paint brush for fine detail work and a roller to finish the rest. Add a second coat if necessary.

4. Mount the trim to the top line of the door using finishing nails.

5. Upholster each interior panel. Cut a piece of foam, batting and fabric for each, allowing 1/2 inch of extra fabric around the edges. Using a spray adhesive, affix the foam to the interior panel, then overlay the batting over the foam, and then lay the fabric on top. Fold the fabric over the edge of the batting and use a staple gun to attach it to the door. Start at the top and work your way down, stapling as you go. Keep the fabric taut and smooth. At the corners, fold the edges of the fabric to make them neat.

6. Use fabric glue to attach fabric trim around the outside edges to hide the staples. To hide the seams, dab a little bit of glue on the end of the trim and fold it under. This will ensure that the two edges of the trim will meet seamlessly.

7. Install the mounting hardware (interlocking flush mounts), aligning it so it is level and will screw directly into the studs in the wall. Mark and mount the hardware to the back of the headboard. Once the hardware is installed, lift the headboard and slide it carefully into place.
