How to Build an Outdoor Plant Wall

Do you want to have a garden but only have a small patio, balcony or deck? Think vertically with hanging potted plants. Learn how to build an outdoor plant wall in this HGTV video:



For this DIY project, you will need:

  • Two 136-inch 2×4’s
  • Two eight-foot 2×2’s
  • Two 40-inch 2×2’s
  • Two 18-inch 45-degree 2×2’s
  • Drill
  • Wire mesh rebar
  • Copper spray paint
  • 2-inch L-brackets
  • 16 2-1/2 inch wood screws
  • 16 cup hooks
  • S hooks for each plant

1. Assemble the frame. Place the bottom rung 10 inches from base. Secure corners with two wood screws. Attach L-brackets in each corner.

2. Add cup hooks to the frame.

3. Spray paint the wire mesh and let dry.

4. Attach the wire mesh to the frame using cup hooks.

5. Screw the 36 inch 2×4 base into the bottom of wall. Repeat on the opposite side.

6. Attach the 18-inch 45-degree 2×2 supports to both sides.

7. Attach L-brackets to base. Repeat on the opposite side.

8. Take the finished wall outside and and hang your plants.
