How to Build a Rotating Storage Tower

Put a new spin on storage by building a space-saving tower that turns. Learn how to build a rotating storage tower in this Lowe’s video:

The clever secret to the spin is the lazy susan mechanism that allows access to all four sides of the tower so you can utilize the space on each face. Get the list of tools and materials and the complete project diagram here.

1. Start by cutting two sides, a top and a bottom. Glue and nail the top to one side, then do the same with the bottom.

2. Add the cut-to-fit divider between the top and the bottom. Add the deep set of shelves to the deep side of the divider and the shorter shelves with the trimmed-out lip to the short side. Add the second side of the tower.

3, Build the base. Glue and nail the side, front and back pieces to the base plate. Then add the trim pieces, mitered and cut to fit, to give it a finished feel.

4. Now add the lazy susan to the base. Draw two lines to find center. The mechanism is essentially two rings, an upper and a lower. Align the screw holes on the lower ring with the center cross lines and mark their position as well as one of the large access holes. Remove the mechanism and drill out that access hole. Put the mechanism back in place and use screws to secure the lower ring to the base plate. When you attach the base to the tower, you’ll use that drilled hole to rotate the base and find the screw holes of the upper ring, allowing you to drive screws to attach the upper ring to the bottom of the tower. A peek through the solid base piece gives you a better look at what’s happening.

5. To finish the top, add spacers, the top plate and mitered trim pieces that match the base.

The faces of the tower can be accessorized with hooks, hangers, cork, metal – whatever is most useful for you. You now have a compact solution with big possibilities!
