How to Build a Custom Headboard with Storage

A substantial headboard lends a real presence to a bedroom, but it can offer much more. Learn how to build a custom headboard with storage in this Lowe’s video:

This headboard does double duty – it not only looks great, but it stores your stuff too with built-ins on both sides. For a complete tools and materials list and detailed instructions for this DIY project, click here.

Get started by building the two columns with the shelves. Cut the column back and side and glue and screw them together. Attach the shelves, the column face, and the filler piece to complete the column. Build the second column as a mirror to the first one.

Next, you’ll cut MDF to size for the column fronts and the headboard itself, which ties the two columns together. Because this project can be adapted to fit any size bed, make sure you’re following the correct cutting directions for this step.

Now, create a classic panel pattern using stiles and rails. Stiles are the vertical elements, and rails are the horizontal elements. Add the top to the headboard, and you’re just about done building.

Add three pieces of trim, mitered molding to give the headboard a real furniture feel. Then you’re ready to prep and apply the finish of your choice.
