How to Build a Block Column

The only thing better than the great outdoors is being comfortable there. But even in an amazing outdoor living space, there’s always room for improvement. Learn how to build a block column in this Lowe’s video:

A great addition to any project, you can build a block column yourself in just four easy steps.

1. Remove the surrounding top soil (roughly six inches deep), and then fill with a level base of compacted gravel and sand.

2. Start laying your base blocks. As you stack, be sure to apply adhesive to each row. Use a staggered pattern, keeping the joints offset, for added strength and a great look. Make sure the rows are square and level, and quickly make adjustments before the adhesive dries.

3. Continue stacking until you reach your desired height, up to a maximum of 42 inches.

4. To create your cap, position six blocks on the top of the column or use a single 20-inch square cap.
