How to Attract Pollinators to Your Garden
Pollinators like butterflies, birds and bees help plants make seeds and increase fruit size. Learn how to attract pollinators to your garden in this video by Better Homes and Gardens:
Pollinators prefer flowers with warm colors like oranges, reds and yellows; these include black-eyed susans, yarrow, coneflowers and butterfly bushes. An easy way to attract pollinators is by setting up a container garden with one or more of these types of flowers.
Some additional gardening tips:
- Keep plants deadheaded as pollinators are drawn to the nectar in the fresh flowers.
- When shopping for flowers, look for plants with open flower forms as well as plants that will attract native pollinators in your area.
- Limit (or eliminate altogether) the use of pesticides.
- Provide a water source such as a bird bath. Put a small stone or pebble in the bird bath so insects can easily get a sip of water.
- Plant flowers in like groups and layer them throughout the garden. You will get beautiful drifts of color, and the pollinators seem to love it as they will have many different types of flowers to visit.
By filling your garden with plants that attract pollinators, you will have a happier garden and a happier environment in general.
