Whether you’re looking to revamp your kitchen, add excitement to your entryway or create a serious statement wall, wallpaper is a simple DIY solution.

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • Wallpaper
  • Tape measure
  • Sponge or cloth
  • Mild cleanser
  • Steel ruler or straight edge
  • Razor knife
  • Pencil
  • Plastic smoother
  • Primer

Determine the amount of wallpaper you need to purchase by measuring the area of each wall. Use an online wallpaper calculator to make this task easier.

1. Prepare the surface: Turn the power off, then remove electrical outlet base plates and socket covers. Wipe dust and dirt from the walls with a cloth and mild cleanser. Give the walls some time to dry before moving on to the next step. Tip: Wait three days to apply wallpaper to freshly painted walls.

2. Make a guide: Measure the width of your wallpaper, then use your tape measure from left to right to calculate that width on the wall. Mark the wall lightly with a pencil on the right end of the tape measure. Hold your straight edge on this mark and draw a straight vertical line. This will be your guide for the first strip.

3. Measure and cut strips: Measure strips to fit the height of the wall, then use your razor blade to cut them.

4. Apply wallpaper: Peel approximately 12 inches of backing off your first strip. Align the top with the ceiling. Carefully peel and stick the wallpaper onto the wall, moving from top to bottom.

5. Smooth out air bubbles: Use a plastic smoother to eliminate any air bubbles and even out the paper.

6. Cut around windows: If you run across a window line, line the wallpaper up along the top and right side and cut along the edge of the window before smoothing the wallpaper down.

Repeat this process until you’ve covered the wall.
