How an Empty Nester Renovated Her Family Home

This home was featured in H&H 22 years ago. Now that the kids have left, this homeowner wanted to give it a modern refresh while re-purposing her existing furniture. See how an empty nester renovated her family home in this House & Home video:

While the home reflects the same values and aesthetic as before, it is now better suited for an empty nester. The modest renovation started with repainting the trim.

The back wall of the kitchen was removed, and a large segmented window and glass door and sidelight were installed, greatly increasing the amount of natural light in the space.

Several furniture pieces were updated, with the dining table re-stained in walnut and a cherry chest painted in a pewter color. The sofa has new slipcovers.

No longer a kids’ hangout, the basement has the single TV in the house, comfortable seating and extra bookcases and serves as an adult lounge.
