Home Kitchen Design – Cabinetry

Cabinetry can be one of the most expensive parts of the kitchen, so you want to make sure you know about the different products on the market and the costs of those products in order to make an informed decision. Learn how to choose kitchen cabinetry in this House & Home video:

Cabinetry is generally the most visible element in the kitchen and therefore is responsible for the room’s overall look and design. In general, choose a cabinet style that will work with the furniture and the accessories in the kitchen.

  • A Shaker profile has clean and simple lines and lends itself to just about any decor, from traditional to country to contemporary.
  • A beadboard profile mimics traditional paneling and is perfect for achieving a country or cottage look.
  • A raised panel profile offers the most detail on a door. It is a versatile look that can complement traditional, transitional and classic decor.

A mix of stock and custom cabinetry is one way to create the look of a high-end kitchen while staying within budget. Some custom pieces to consider are a range hood cover and an island that resembles a piece of furniture.

In terms of storage requirements, cabinet drawers should support about 75 pounds when open, and cabinets should measure at least 1/2 inch thick all around. Shelving should be at least 5/8 inch thick to prevent bowing.

Cabinet hardware is such an important element in the kitchen, and some designers call it the “jewelry” of the kitchen. Whether you want ornate or streamlined, you can find hardware to suit any style of kitchen.
