Green Kitchen Renovation

Watch how these homeowners did their own green kitchen renovation and saved over $10,000 in this DIY Network video:

The homeowners realized they had outgrown their tiny kitchen. The floor was uneven, and the walls were very drafty with old blown-in insulation. Their goal was to make everything in the kitchen eco-friendly and save $10K by doing the work themselves; they had received bids ranging from $25,000 to $30,000. They did all the work including the demolition and used 12-foot dry-wall sheets to save time on taping and spackling.

Elements of this DIY project included:

  • Donating the old cabinets and replacing them with new ones that extend to the ceiling
  • Replacement of the old insulation with environmentally friendly material
  • Replacement of the tile
  • New backsplash
  • Installation of a recycled content countertop
  • Painting with non-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint that is fumeless and odorless
  • New Energy Star appliances
