Family-Friendly Main Floor Makeover

The main floor in this home was closed off with a disjointed kitchen in the back, the living room in the middle, and the dining room in the front, and the layout was not functional for this young family. The homeowners wanted to open it up and create a great space for cooking and entertaining with a more usable bathroom and a more cohesive look throughout. See the details of this family-friendly main floor makeover in this House & Home video:

In the entryway, bright wallpaper brings all of the colors of the house together. The original exposed brick wall was retained. A new island, window seat and cabinetry running to the ceiling maxes out storage in the kitchen. Because there is no coat closet in the back, a dual pantry/coat closet provides the versatility the family needs. The original dining room was transformed into a living room for reading and listening to records. Built-ins provide display space and storage for the ever-growing record collection, and the fireplace makes it a cozy gathering place. The updated bathroom has a freestanding tub, glass shower, porcelain tile, and luxe but more casual finishes, giving it an Italian farmhouse feel.
