Environmentally Friendly Flooring Options For Kitchens
If you are looking for environmentally friendly flooring for your kitchen, consider linoleum, bamboo or cork. Their inherent comfort, durability and visual design options make them stunning alternatives to traditional flooring. Learn more in this DIY Network video:
After decades of being out of favor, linoleum is making a comeback. Made from linseed oil and plant materials, it is water resistant, easy to clean and comfortable under foot. It offers many choices in vibrant colors and design possibilities and is available in sheets or tiles. The color runs throughout the top layer, so dings and scrathces are less likely to show.
Bamboo is one of the strongest wood floors around with the tensile strength of steel. It is highly durable and resists swelling and contraction with changes in humidity. Bamboo flooring is prefinished and engineered with tongue-and-groove joints like standard solid wood.
Cork comes from the outer bark of the cork oak tree. The bark is stripped away by hand without harm to the tree, which grows new cork bark all over again. Its cellular honeycomb structure gives it a cushion-like feel under foot, absorbing vibrations and sound. If dented, its natural elasticity allows it to spring back. Cork comes in pre-finished tiles in a range of colors and patterns. The tiles have a natural non-slip surface that makes them ideal for wet areas such as kitchen floors.
