Elements of Minimalist Design

Minimalism is about reducing everything to its most basic form. Color, form and space work in harmony by having a monochromatic color palette, being very mindful of the textures that you use, and decluttering as much as you can to create a nice, open and elegant space. Learn about the elements of minimalist design in this Build with Ferguson video:

Minimalism really emerged in America in the 1960s as a way to express beauty in the most simple form in interior design. It was heavily influenced by traditional Japanese architecture, but over the years minimalism has worked its way into many aspects of life. It’s now a philosophy and not just a style. Some of the most important elements of minimalist design are clean lines, a very simple color palette, decluttering your space, and organization in the sum of the details.

For a quick update in a space that already exists, focus on what can be paired down (for example, removing crown moldings and details from cabinet doors) and incorporate a lot of clean lines and architectural fixtures to define the space as more minimalist.

The bathroom featured in this video embodies the minimalist style with its very clean monochromatic color palette, a splash of blue for interest, simple lines, and textural materials like concrete and tile.
