Start by laying out the frame. Separate the vertical pieces, called stiles, using 6-inch spacers, then join them with a horizontal piece called a rail. Glue and screw a rail to each stile at both ends.
The hooks for the frame start with a simple block that gets a 45-degree cut at one end. Because you’ll be cutting four different sizes, it’s a good idea to make all the cuts at once, taping the pieces together and labeling them for fast and easy assembly. For each hook, you’ll flip the end piece back so that the grain is running the same way on both sides. Add a little dab of glue and give it a quick rub; that little motion makes for an extra strong joint. Use a piece of tape to hold the pieces in place until they dry.
While the hooks are drying, mark and label their locations on the frame. When the hooks are ready, add another dab of glue, and rub each hook in place. You can use a piece of tape to hold them in place while you’re working if you like. Once they’re all dry, flip the frame on its side and clamp it into place to drive a screw into each hook. The screw should go through each piece along a line – the screw just adds that extra bit of strength and security.
Add your favorite finish, then hang in your bedroom – or really any room – for some extra stylish storage.
