Door Replacement – Is It Time?
Front door replacement can improve your home’s energy efficiency, curb appeal and perceived value. How do you determine if your entry door needs replacement? Here are some questions to consider:
- Is the door cracked, rotten, split, warped or weathered?
- Is the door rusting or does it have dents and dings?
- Is the doorjamb surrounded by rot?
- Does the door lock securely?
- Does the door open and close properly?
- Are there signs of insect or water damage?
- Are there water infiltration or draft problems?
- Does the door seal properly?
- If the door has glass, is it broken, cracked, foggy, or slipping in the frame?
If it’s time to replace your entry door, should you do it yourself or hire a professional? An improperly installed door can lead to operational problems, water infiltration or drafts. If you are replacing the door only or replacing a single door and frame, this can be done as a DIY project. If you have problems such as uneven or damaged sub-flooring or the new pre-hung unit is larger than the opening, or if you do not have the tools or the skills to do the installation yourself, a professional installer is required. You will also want to hire a professional if the door will be in direct contact with the elements (no exterior overhang) or if you are installing a double-door entryway.
