There’s more to this project than just a pretty face; it’s actually a clever combination of storage and serving space thanks to a double-duty door. Open, it’s a convenient serving surface; closed, it’s a screenprint style piece of art. Get a complete list of tools and materials and detailed instructions here.

1. Lay out the four slats for the door and glue and screw a cleat to the back side. Slide the assembly to the edge of your work surface so you can attach the handle, gluing and screwing it in place.

2. On one of the two side pieces, mark the position for a bolt that will attach the door to the storage case. Stack both side pieces and drill both bolt holes at the same time. This ensures the height of the holes match perfectly.

3. Start making the case by gluing a piece of trim to the top shelf and let it dry. Use spacers to position the top and lower shelves, clamping them in place and joining them to the sides with screws. If you’re going to mount the case directly to a wall, add the brackets now; hold off if you’re going to attach it to the optional hangar frame.

4. Build the divider assembly. Glue and screw the small shelf to the divider, and then slip it into position so you can attach it to the case.

5. Join the door and case assemblies. Lay the door face down on spacers and slip the case over it, using shims all the way around to keep a small separation between the two pieces.

6. Using the bolt holes in the side pieces as a guide, drill holes into the edges of the door and slip the bolts in temporarily. A magnetized mechanism holds the door closed, so mark the location and then flip the whole project over. Now you can remove the bolts and replace them, adding the washers that are in the final assembly. This aligns the door correctly for attaching the magnet mechanism.

7. Remove the bolts and give the door and case the finish of your choice. When you reassemble, add a dab of silicone on the ends of the bolts to ensure they stay in place.
