DIY Removable Faux Fireplace

Do you want to have a fireplace but live in a apartment that doesn’t have one? You can make one using an electrical log insert and a handmade wood surround that you can take with you when you move. Learn how to make this DIY removable faux fireplace in this video by EngineerYourSpace:

2×3 pine boards were used for the wood surround, while 1×12 pine boards were used for the firebox, base and top of the structure. It is easy to change the proportions of everything, making the structure taller or wider or the firebox higher or lower. 1/4-inch plywood was used to cover the structure, and a hole was drilled in the back to accommodate the electrical cord of the log insert.

The inside of the firebox was painted with black chalk paint. To give the fireplace a beachy casual look, the plywood cover was first painted and then covered with Smart Tiles with a stone finish. The mantel was made from 1x4s and 1x2s, screwed to the fireplace and painted. For safety, the fireplace was secured to the wall with an anchor.

The last steps were to place the log insert inside the fireplace and complete the look with a hearth made from wood and covered with Smart Tiles in a black subway pattern.

NOTE: Keep in mind that this project is for decorative purposes only, and that the log insert should not be used as a heater. Smart Tiles should not be used on a floor or in front of a real fireplace.
